Robert Johnson was born in Los Angeles, CA in 1943, and spent most of his early years in and around the area. After graduating, he attended U.N.M. and Cal State Northridge but dropped out in 1965 to begin his world travels by hitch-hiking through Europe for six months. “By staying in youth hostels, you really could see Europe on $5.00 a day!”
Following his adventures in Europe, Johnson joined American Airlines, working out of the Los Angeles airport. The 37 years he invested in the airlines allowed him to use flight passes to become a world traveler, visiting more than 50 countries. In addition, he was a tour leader on trips to Peru, Nepal, China Japan and Kenya.
After marrying on the island of Bali in 1974, Johnson and his wife, Sharon, continued globe hopping to distant and exotic locales, developing a keen eye for ethnic arts and crafts. Johnson’s home is a small international museum displaying objects and images from nearly every corner of the globe. As a part of their collection, Johnson gathered unusual beads and silver work from craftsmen on five continents.
Until his retirement in 2004, Johnson’s collect was kept in boxes and trays. After leaving the corporate world and settling in Corrales, Johnson has been creating truly amazing necklaces, bracelets and other ornamental jewelry. Although Johnson considers himself a beginning artist, his works shows the imagination he has captured from artisans around the world.
