Annie Hooten

Art, music and performance have been an elaborate part of Annie Hooten’s life. From theatre and painting to dance and jewelry making, she has a touch and an eye for creative work. Born in Miami, FL to a pioneering reconstructive and plastic surgeon father and a nurturing mother who encouraged her talents with much enthusiasm, she was introduced to the arts and rich cultural experiences at an early age.

For most of her adult life, Annie lived in Switzerland and Australia, immersing herself in local culture and creative events. For many of those years, she was a folk artist and owned a retail shop and teaching studio in Melbourne, Australia. A chance to enhance her clogging skills at a national convention put her on a path for Albuquerque after she fell in love with one of the instructors, local resident Ed Hooten!

After becoming a New Mexico resident fifteen years ago, Annie put aside her paint brushes and took up polymer clay work, which became a deep passion for several years. Her love of experimenting with all mediums, however, has caused her to branch out and she now also works in mixed media, journaling, hand-made books, funky dolls, metal work and textile design. She has won numerous ribbons in the New Mexico State Fair over the past several years, including two Best of Show. She recently was a finalist in the Artavita competition and received a Certificate of Excellence for her submission.

Annie was co-owner of The Wooden Cow art gallery for several years and has now opened NEW TRICKS, located in the Albuquerque Sawmill Village at 1751 Bellamah NW, Suite 2101. NEW TRICKS is a teaching facility offering a wide variety of art & craft workshops, unique mixed media art supplies as well as small gallery.
